The following pottery is donated by Mei Wong who is a
Sr. Software Quality Engineer at DS Simulia and has been
with Simulia since 2007. She began working with
ceramics as a hobby in 2000. Over the years, she has
given her ceramic pieces as gifts to relatives and
friends. More recently, she created ceramic pieces for
her meditation teacher, who encouraged her to exhibit
her works. In 2008, she sold over 20 pieces to raise
money for the "Thousand Buddha Temple".

Construction Method:
Built with wheel throwing and coil.
This was my first
attempt at a vase taller than 20 inches. I
threw (to shape on a potter’s wheel) the base
piece up to 8 inches high, then added coil and
threw again to increase height. Each coil and
re-throw added 1.5 to 2 inches in height to the
vase. This piece took roughly two to three
weeks to complete because only one to two coils
could be added a night. During construction, I
had to make sure the pieces did not dry up so
that the clay remained malleable and the clay
coils could be added. When the piece was
completed, I covered it to allow it to dry
slowly and evenly. This helps prevent
cracking. It took an additional two weeks to
dry to a bone dried condition.
After drying, it was
ready for bisque firing. This strengthens the
clay and prepares it for glazing. The piece was
placed in the kiln and fired up to Cone 06
(1,860 degrees F) then cooled to ambient
temperature. This took a day. After removal
from the kiln, the piece was ready for glazing
(coloring). After glazing, it was ready for the
glaze firing. The piece was put in the kiln to
candle it (heat to low temperature) overnight to
prevent thermal shock. The next day, the
temperature is gradually raised to Cone 10
(2,380 degrees F) , then allowed to cool down.
During this firing, salt and soda are added to
provide additional glaze. This final firing
took 1 day. |
